First Time in Jeju — Everything You Need to Know
Jeju Island is South Korea’s most beloved travel destination — and for good reason. Volcanic landscapes, crystal-clear beaches, and some of the best seafood you’ll ever eat. Here’s everything I wish I knew before my first visit.
Getting to Jeju
The easiest way to reach Jeju is by plane. Flights from Seoul (Gimpo Airport) take about 1 hour and are surprisingly affordable — often under $50 if you book in advance with airlines like Jeju Air or T’way Air.
Ferries are also available from several mainland ports, but the flight is usually the better option for most travelers.
Best Time to Visit
Jeju is beautiful year-round, but each season offers something different:
- Spring (March–May): Cherry blossoms and canola flowers in full bloom — stunning
- Summer (June–August): Beach season, but expect crowds and humidity
- Autumn (September–November): Clear skies, fall foliage, and perfect hiking weather
- Winter (December–February): Quiet, cold, and magical with snow on Hallasan
Getting Around
Renting a car is by far the best way to explore Jeju. Public buses exist but are slow. International driving permits are accepted — just bring yours from home.
Top Things to Do
- Hike Hallasan — Korea’s highest mountain sits right in the middle of Jeju
- Explore Manjanggul Cave — a massive lava tube that stretches for kilometers
- Swim at Hamdeok Beach — the clearest water on the island
- Walk along Olle Trail — a scenic coastal walking path with breathtaking views
- Visit Seongsan Ilchulbong — a volcanic crater that rises straight from the sea
Jeju rewards slow travel. Don’t rush it.
